Indian House Rock

Indian Rockhouse Cave, located along the Indian Rockhouse Trail in the Buffalo National River area of Arkansas, is a remarkable natural shelter that has attracted visitors for thousands of years. This expansive bluff cave features a natural skylight and a spring-fed stream, creating a unique and serene environment. Archaeological excavations in the 1930s uncovered evidence of Native American habitation dating back to around 7,000 BC, including stone tools and basketry, highlighting the site's historical significance.

The 3.5-mile loop trail leading to the cave offers hikers a moderately strenuous journey through diverse Ozark landscapes. Along the way, visitors encounter features such as a sinkhole, a waterfall, an abandoned zinc mine, and sculpted bedrock formations, all characteristic of the region's karst topography. The trail culminates at the Indian Rockhouse Cave, where the combination of natural beauty and historical context provides a rewarding experience for those interested in geology, history, and outdoor adventure.
